Accompanying each piece is a statement by the artist explaining the inspiration or technique for the work, placing it in the context not only of the artist’s oeuvre but of contemporary Northwest Coast art.
While the book is divided into three sections (Traditional, Cross-cultural, and Contemporary), what it clearly reveals is a shift from art representative of a particular region or culture to a new pan-Indian art that draws on the traditions of many First Nations and blends them with contemporary interpretations and materials.
