Published in 1893 in London and written by a missionary. As Edgerton Young traveled through Northern Canada, he lived with and among the Aboriginal people. Stories from Indian Wigwams records the Aboriginal people’s daily life, challenges, religion, campfire stories, marriage customs, wit and humor, speeches, medicine, the influence of the Hudson Bay Company on the them, the animals around them, and the missionary men who sought to convert them. It has been said that when author Edgerton Young, who took the name Praying Mantis, taught some of the Aboriginal people to read using simple syllabic characters, he wrote on the rock for them the words, “”God is Love.””
